CA DELTA REPORT
Updated - 1/10/2008

Brought to you by...

Well, First off I must say, I am sorry for the slow updates lately. I have returned to the Delta and River's End Marina.

Let the New Year Begin….

Wow as 2007 closes there have been so many good things going on both on the water and off. While sure there were some trials in 2007 that many of you that know me personally know of in my life. Being back home here on the water has certainly put the tests of a Divorce, Brian tumors and other things so far behind me. Thanks to the greatest gift of all my God.

The addition of my first grandchildren has this ole guy and Delta dog all fired up as Valerie and ooking forward to there birth anytime now. The friends and family I have that I work with here on this staff and others have taught me to take on that old Iconelli saying “Never Give Up” sorry Ike people have been using that phrase or some form of it over the past few hundred years. Something like I like to remember “as pile your  troubles  on His shoulders….”

For 2008 we have some really exciting things to look forward too here on the Delta and a couple of rants to get off my chest early so that I don’t have to carry them with me. One of my favorite things to do in the Tournament realm of things is simple one-day pro-ams. When I started fishing a few of the one day gigs years ago it was Red Man we all fished. The camaraderie was a blast, the ams anxious to learn and it was affordable. Since that time one-day pro-ams have struggled for one reason or another but they are a fantastic way to have some fun and great competive fields in a atmosphere where we can still afford to have fun and get a little cash here and there as well.

Nor-Cal bass is the oldest tournament circuit in California, announced this year they will have two circuits, fishing in the foothills and Delta. They are run as a non-profit organization with everyone volunteering his or her time. No one is paid as an officer of Nor-Cal Bass. Over the past 5 years we have averaged 96 anglers (Pro and co anglers) per event. With two regions and 10 tournaments with a tournament of champions at the end of the year. The Motherlode region get’s started January 19th , 2008 at Mc Clure and the Delta region will have 5 tournaments out of Tracy Oasis starting February 17th 2008.

The top 20 pro and amateur finishers from each of our two divisions (Motherlode, Delta) will qualify for the Championship Tournament. The top 40 pro and am qualifiers for the championship tournament will be based on the best 4 of 5 events fished in each of their respective divisions, (20 pro and am from the Motherlode and 20 pro and am from the Delta). Anglers that fish all 5 events will keep their 10 show points in the calculation of total points. Angler of the Year will be based on total points for all 5 events with both Motherlode and Delta crowning a pro and am division champion. After fishing with Nor-cal the past couple of years, I must say the is an exciting chance to fish pro-ams close to home with great camaraderie and a huge bunch of fun!  Check out Nor-Calbass.com for more details.

For the bonehead move of the year, DFG has expanded the two rod stamp to now include the Delta. This already struggling fishery needs. As one the most poached bodies of water in the State I don’t understand the wisdom here. Living on the water, I admit that this is something I see almost daily as it is, it is like just giving up and punting on first down. If anything the move should have been the exact opposite, eliminate the two-rod stamp completely everywhere, but now the rivers too have to under go the extra pressure. Once again even the DFG is treating the Delta as nothing more than a holding tank for water exports without regard to the impact on the fishery. As many of you wasted your time on the emptying of an Island and the fish trapped there, I have to ask What are you thinking? This is more of an issue for those wanting to Help the Delta fishing….Hmmm where are you now?

As far as the river the striper bite had picked up agian before the storms but I spent a lot of time bouncing off things with the low water til yesterday when higher water from the recent storms. The influx of water has improved the water temperatures but visibilities have diminshed. So for the next couple weeks, Head to the ISE Shows in San mateo and sacramento and say Hi. Also Sacramento Pro Tackle will have Dan's Clissic Shimmer jigs and the Sacramento Show.

Thanks for your patience. Enjoy!

Now is the time to fish in the delta. All the conditions are just right for striper and sturgeon fishing. Our two boats the Fish 'n' Fool IV and the Fish 'n' Fun have been out with groups catching some nice striped bass.

The Fish 'n' Fool IV had a sturgeon trip on Sunday and picked up three keeper sturgeon from 49 inches to 56 inches and a ten pound striper while releasing 11 shaker sturgeon from 39 to 44 inches for four people.

The stripers seem to be in many of the spots in the delta right now. The Mothball Fleet, Seal Island, Suisun Bay Grizzly Bay, Honker Bay, Montezuma Slough, Chain Island and below the PG&E Plant at Pittsburg are just some of the places to catch some striped bass. Bullheads and shad have been the best bait. This is the time of the year that the bullheads get to be one of the best baits in the Pittsburg area. Patience is the name of the game when fishing with bullheads.

The sturgeon fishing has really been good this last week. Suisun Cut, Middle Grounds, between Roe and Ryer Island, Broad Slough, by the PG&E plant at Pittsburg has been some of the hot spots for catching sturgeon. This should be a good season for sturgeon. The weather continues to help the fishing conditions in the delta.

This is the time of the year that we have been looking forward to and all the conditions are right, now. This holiday season should be one of the best times to fish in the delta area. Give us a call for information or let us take you out. We have put the heaters aboard for the cool weather.

Hook Line And Sinker Report
Robert from the Hook in Oakley reports.
Black Bass:
The bass bite has seemed to pick up a little in consistent average weights as some of the more recent tournaments have seen a 3 lb. or better average to win. The crankbait bite has busted wide open with Luhr-Jensen Speed Traps and River2Sea V-Crank 60 being the top producers. Both in shad or red craw patterns will produce big numbers of fish and size as well. Look for the fish to be moving into areas where they can corral baitfish. Also, if you get bit in one area continue fishing it thoroughly because will be schooled up and catching multiple fish in one area is not uncommon right now.

Striped Bass:
With the recent rains and winds of the past 2 weeks the river has started to muddy up which has scattered the fish off the main rivers and into more protected areas that are holding cleaner water. Try heading further east into the delta to find this. Disco Bay has turned on as of late with fish to 27lbs. being reported to me. Most people are waiting to find busting bait then catching them on topwater baits, swimbaits and rattletraps. When the fish are so closely schooled up colors of the baits don't really seem to matter but anything in a shad pattern will get eaten!

Crappie:
The crappie have seemed to turn on big time around the whole delta. Mostly marinas and areas with wood seemed to be holding the most fish and I have had a lot of reports of BIG crappie being caught right now. Try crappie jigs in red/white, chartreuse or brown, red worms or small minnows all fished either under a bobber or off the bottom will draw strikes right now

A bit about Captain Steve, Captain Steve fished the San Francisco Bay since 1970, when his grandfather would take him out to the old Berkeley pier. He bought his first boat in 1980 and got his Captain's license in 1997. He enjoys small groups (no more than 6) and gives personal attention to all. Having 2 young daughters himself, he is especially patient with children on the boat. Bring your own equipment or use Steve's top of the line equipment. Steve has impressive state of the art commercial electronics on the boat to optimize your fishing experience! And yes, we went to the same High School, Welcome Capt. Steve!

Hey everyone,

I had good news and bad news today. There was some mix up with my short crew of two and so they were not there at 12:00 noon. I decided to take a few hours and fish for myself as I never get to fish. I steamed out to the same spot as I did the last 2 trips and planned to fish the last 3 hours of the flood tide. Well I got my 2 rods out , 1 with eel and grass shrimp and the other with roe. After about about 30 minutes I had a light bite on the roe and missed the set. About 45 min later I had a light bite again and hooked what felt like a big fish but after a couple minutes he came unhooked . I reeled in and saw that about half of the roe was still there so I sent it out to about the spot where I lost the fish. Within 5 minutes I get a light bite and set the hook, this time it stuck good and the fight was on. After about
5 minutes and 50 yards behind the boat the fish shot straight out of the water. I saw about
3/4 of the body and knew it was a good fish. I actually yelled when the fish jumped! The fish gave up after 20 minutes and my arms were burning. I netted the fish got the hook out and took the photo in a matter of minutes. Thank goodness for self timers and tripods. I managed to get the fish back in the water without scratching or splitting any of the fins. I have to say I have not battled a sturgeon in a long time and forgot what it was like. I was so pumped after my hands were shaking. I put the rod back out and had a frosty beverage to calm down. Soon after I started to calm down I missed one more light bite. At that point I headed back to the harbor. If you like or would like to try fishing you need to fight a sturgeon at least once in your life. It is just AWESOME!!! It is good to feel the power again. Every dog has his day!!!
The water is still holding at 47.5 and I did not see as many fish as I did 2 trips ago but there are still a lot of fish going through. Last trip when we limited it was mostly eel and grass shrimp. This short 2 1/2 hour trip it was all roe.
Go figure? I will be back on the water tomorrow at 4:30 pm.
