Sturgeon tops in the Delta

Few anglers are on the water, but those out between breaks in the weather are starting to see success. There is plenty to be hopeful for, including warmer water temperatures and chocolate-colored runoff that most associate with a sturgeon feeding Frenzy.

Sturgeon are active on the main Sacramento River below Decker Island and all the way through Broad Slough and the mouth of Montezuma Slough. Diamondbacks also are reported in Cache Slough and the deeper holes on the San Joaquin River side, especially off Venice Island.

Boaters should be aware of floating debris that could not only tangle anchor lines but impale hulls. Night fishing is particularly dangerous on the Sacramento River main stem.

Shore bound anglers work the levees for catfish with clams, mackerel and Duck/chicken liver. They also fling live minnows in hopes of landing a largemouth bass or striped bass. Because of the very good catfish bite, anglers are lining most any access that is reachable by vehicle.

The colored water and bit warmer temps have also started to help improve success for those trying for blacks,

Don’t forget, 2010 fishing licenses became effective on Jan. 1. Delta anglers do not need a Bay-Delta Enhancement Stamp because the requirement was repealed. And as of March 1 st anglers do not have to visibly display their fishing license above the belt, another requirement that was scratched from the regulations.

Rio Vista - Isleton

Bob’s Bait Report www.themasterbaiter.com

Isleton Area
by Can Nguyen -- Bob's Bait Shop

It was very rough weather last week with the rain, but it was not as heavy as previously. It was really cold and the high water contributed to slow fishing activities during the week.

Sturgeon fishing was good in most of the Delta channels from the Antioch Bridge up to Light 49 at Cache Slough. Some good size sturgeon were caught on ghost shrimp and pile worms at the Double Power Lines in Decker Island, along highway 160 from Three Mile Slough up to the Isleton Bridge. Light 36 and light 36A were good spots with a couple of sturgeon caught last week there.

Striped bass fishing was fair and most of the striped bass were caught at the Mokelumne River on pile worm, ghost shrimp, or sardine.

The water is getting clearer although there were still plenty of junk and weeds floating almost everywhere from Decker Island to the Rio Vista Bridge.

Fish Hookers Report

It's hard to believe that one month of 2008 is already gone but with it has gone most of the real dirty water and debris. The water is getting clear and the temperature is remaining steady at about 49 to 50 degrees. Last Sunday Joe Rodriguez and his friends aboard the Fish 'n' Fool IV had the best day sturgeon fishing. The group of six anglers boated three keeper sturgeon, a 48 incher, a 55 incher and a 62 incher along with releasing 5 shaker sturgeon. The weather was unbelievably beautiful that day and so was the catching. The group aboard the Fish 'n' Fun fishing in the same area did not have as good of luck. They caught 2 shakers and lost one with a leader break. The best bait for the day was salmon roe.

The sturgeon fishing continues to be the best bet. The stripers are beginning to move back into the area but it is hard to find good concentrations of them and bait for the stripers is still a little hard to find. The shad and bullheads and mudsuckers are the best choices for bait for the striped bass. The water is clearing enough in a few areas that the trollers could possibly try for the stripers.

The best areas for the strugeon has been Middle Grounds along sturgeon ally, Montezuma Slough, Big Cut and Little Cut and the Mothball Fleet. This is the time of the year that most of these sturgeon wiill be staying in the area, feeding and getting ready to spawn. With all the nice fresh water in the delta system the fishing should continue to be very consistant.

Our two boats continue to leave each day we are booked from the City of Pittsburg Marina at 7 am. Just give us a call if you would like to get aboard any day of the week.

A bit about Captain Steve, Captain Steve fished the San Francisco Bay since 1970, when his grandfather would take him out to the old Berkeley pier. He bought his first boat in 1980 and got his Captain's license in 1997. He enjoys small groups (no more than 6) and gives personal attention to all. Having 2 young daughters himself, he is especially patient with children on the boat. Bring your own equipment or use Steve's top of the line equipment. Steve has impressive state of the art commercial electronics on the boat to optimize your fishing experience! And yes, we went to the same High School, Welcome Capt. Steve!

Steve reports things are turning around in the West Delta, The bite did slow a little the last 3 days.

Lucky Strike Fishing Report www.luckystrikefishing.com

Sturgeon fishing is by far ahead of last years score at this time.
Xmas eve and the day after Xmas was as good as it gets. Action all day on large Sturgeon and shakers to keep everyone on their toes.

The weather was just right for this time of the year. Light winds and no rain. The tides were in our favor too.
Al Millan from San Mateo caught the biggest fish 66" Mike (Rock Pile) from Stockton caught 64" and we caught a 46" and a 48" Xmas eve .

The action continued the day after Xmas with a 65" and a 57 " Sturgeon.
We should have continued success in the coming months.
Since Sept 10th we have caught 71 Keepers 6 oversize and 235 Shakers. 12 Bass while fishing for Sturgeon. A great year so far.

The weather is changing and that should stir up the Sturgeon to be even more aggressive. So put your coats on and lets go fishing.

I will be doing seminars at San Mateo International Sportsmen Show on Thursday Jan 12 at 4:30 pm and on Fri Jan 13 at 2:30. I will do one Seminar in Sacramento on January 21 at 5:30 pm. I will show some of my hook ups and tips on how we catch Sturgeon.
