Sturgeon
tops in the Delta
Few anglers are on the water, but those out between breaks in the weather are starting to see success. There is plenty to be hopeful for, including warmer water temperatures and chocolate-colored runoff that most associate with a sturgeon feeding Frenzy.
Sturgeon are active on the main Sacramento River below Decker Island and all the way through Broad Slough and the mouth of Montezuma Slough. Diamondbacks also are reported in Cache Slough and the deeper holes on the San Joaquin River side, especially off Venice Island.
Boaters should be aware of floating debris that could not only tangle anchor lines but impale hulls. Night fishing is particularly dangerous on the Sacramento River main stem.
Shore bound anglers work the levees for catfish with clams, mackerel and Duck/chicken liver. They also fling live minnows in hopes of landing a largemouth bass or striped bass. Because of the very good catfish bite, anglers are lining most any access that is reachable by vehicle.
The colored water and bit warmer temps have also started to help improve success for those trying for blacks,
Don’t forget, 2010 fishing licenses became effective on Jan. 1. Delta anglers do not need a Bay-Delta Enhancement Stamp because the requirement was repealed. And as of March 1 st anglers do not have to visibly display their fishing license above the belt, another requirement that was scratched from the regulations.
