The Bite is on!

Bass fishing is on the verge of an explosion, and like clock work anglers are out in Big numbers. Try Pepper Jigs and Spinner baits on ledges adjacent to dead end sloughs or flats. Or near the entrances to these areas with Speed Traps and Radar 10's for the quality black bass. The best action is found throughout the many areas of the Central Delta. There are still a few coming from the Discovery Bay area and in the West Delta, Big Break and Frank's are starting to be Hot.

The sturgeon are grabbing shrimp baits The stripers are still the biting, but you have to work a bit to find the best water. Those that are bait fishing are getting a few stripers. Sturgeon are best in the Cache Slough Area and Collinsville Areas to add to the already decent fishing in the area. The results are encouraging as anglers start to see some rain run-off help spur the bait fishing action. Still many of the best results continue for those fishing the Powerlines and Decker Island area of the Sacramento River.

The Rain and big tides have added color to the water in the west Delta. This has really helped turn things around as there have been some fish taken between storms. Shrimp baits are best in The area with top mention coming to those in the Duck Club area Big Cut. It looks like the consistency here will be improving as the Diamondbacks become more willing.

Bob’s Bait Report www.themasterbaiter.com

It was very nice last week and continuing this week with temperature climbing gradually to 70 degree. The longer the good weather is, the better change for water getting clearer.

So far the water is still muddy but it will clear up in the coming weeks. This should be more changes for striped bass run earlier and sturgeon bites will be hot in most parts of the Delta from Sherman Island up to Cache slough, or Sacramento area.

Fishing for striped bass was slow last week due to muddy and cold water. However there was some good striped bass reported in Mokelumne river on pile worm or ghost shrimp.

Sturgeon fishing was good at the Dump Gate in Isleton last week. Most of these sturgeon were caught at night during the low tide on either ghost shrimp or grass shrimp.

Fishing for sturgeon required a lot of patient and for some it was boring since it takes very longer time to have a bite. Most sturgeon bite are very light. There were a lot of changes to miss setting the hook and sturgeon likely gone when they bite the hook. Using double hook leader has more change for sturgeon hooked itself than a single hook leader.

Steal leader with built-in slider sinker is best since it hold the bait lay down to the bottom river. Four different good baits are using to fish for sturgeon are grass shrimp, ghost shrimp, lamprey eel, and salmon roe. Herring is good from Bay Point to Sherman Island.

Lamprey eel works best from Rio Vista Bridge towards upstream. Grass shrimp bait work best in most parts of the Delta while ghost shrimp bait works good from Rio Vista to Sacramento area or in Mokelumne River areas.

Due to high demand sudden last weekend, most bait stores ran out of bait earlier. Grass shrimp bait is getting smaller and hard to keep them alive. For that reason, grass shrimp bait won’t last more than three days in captive.

Hope this coming week will be better for fishing striped bass and sturgeon. The weather is getting better and warmer. Our store will open 7 days a week again starting next week.

Best luck to you and have a nice coming weekend.

Hook Line And Sinker Report
Robert from the Hook in Oakley reports.
Black Bass:
The largemouth bite has inceased some in overall weight with the recent cold weather. It has dropped the water temps into the mid to low 50's which means you'll have to slow down and cover areas very thouroughly to get the most and better quality bites. Keys for getting bit right now are to look for areas out of extreme current, clearer water and areas holding lots of bait. If you find these 3 keys you will find the fish. Fish slower techniques with jigs and Pork, swim baits and texas rigging and stick to more straight tail or small curly tail worms and down size your presentations. Also, a suspending rip bait this time of the year works well. There are some monsters coming in with several 10 pound class fish.

Striped Bass:
The majority of the stripers have moved well into the middle portion of the delta by now and from Frank's Tract to Stockton on the San Joaquin River should be holding good numbers of fish and will until Feburary. Also, Old and Middle Rivers and into Discovery Bay are holding some good sized fish right now with 30lbs.+ sized fish being reported in the last week. With the water temp. dropping drastically and dirtier water flowing in bait fishing will be the best bet for top results. On the live end mudsuckers and minnows fished off the bottom and fresh or frozen shad will all get the job done.

A bit about Captain Steve, Captain Steve fished the San Francisco Bay since 1970, when his grandfather would take him out to the old Berkeley pier. He bought his first boat in 1980 and got his Captain's license in 1997. He enjoys small groups (no more than 6) and gives personal attention to all. Having 2 young daughters himself, he is especially patient with children on the boat. Bring your own equipment or use Steve's top of the line equipment. Steve has impressive state of the art commercial electronics on the boat to optimize your fishing experience! And yes, we went to the same High School, Welcome Capt. Steve!

Steve reports, "It looks like the spring run of bass has started. We have been targeting sturgeon and fishing just 1 to 2 rods for bass and doing well on the bass. The sturgeon fishing has still been scratchey. Last night we had on shaker and one oversized. But 3 bass at 8,16 and 27 lbs.

Same details as above.
