The Weather Slow things down a bit!

Dan Mathisen Outdoors Spring Break has many families out ready to take advantage of the time-off, yet the rain has continued to fall dampening spirits of many who have looked forward to the brief spring break. If you don’t mind getting a bit wet there are some decent bites for anglers.

One of the most popular options in the Delta now is the in many of the delta backwaters. Jolly's Bait and Tackle in Stockton reports a flurry of activity for the crappie as anglers' load up on mini-jigs and medium minnows. There are many anglers regularly heading to the Whiskey Slough area in the Central Delta area. The crappie are on the small side by foothill standards yet there is plenty of interest in the slabsides by area bank anglers.

Boaters can be found searching for the crappie in many areas of Disappointment and Little Potato Slough, again anglers are concentrating on protected pockets with brush. Bluegill are starting to show on the warmers days for those tossing mealworms or red worms under bobbers too.

In the Rio Vista area the sturgeon are the best bet grabbing shrimp baits. Sturgeon are best in the Cache Slough Area and Collinsville Areas to add to the already decent fishing in the area. The results are better anglers start to see some results while bait fishing. Still many of the best results continue for those fishing the light 7 and the Decker Island area of the Sacramento River.

The West Delta bite has really been solid compared to just a couple of month's ago as there have been some qaulity fish taken on the flats. Shrimp baits are best bets in the area. The area's with top mention coming to those off the Light 33 and the Montezuma Slough Area. It looks like the consistency here will be improving as the Weather becomes more willing.

Rio Vista - Isleton

Bob’s Bait Report www.themasterbaiter.com

The good weather was last throughout the week until this Tuesday. This is the best time ever in a year when it’s just warm for outdoor activities. Boating, skiing, fishing, or picnicking is most preferred outdoor activities in the Delta area.

Fishing for sturgeon was fair to good in most of the Delta Rivers including Sacramento river, Cache Slough, Steam Boat Slough, Old Sacramento River, San Joaquin River, Mokelumne Rivers, and Georgiana Slough.

Sturgeon baits are grass shrimp, ghost shrimp, pile worm, and salmon roe.

Sturgeon leader can be single hook or double hook. Slider sinker can be used along with snap swivel then the sturgeon leader. Sinker size can be from 4oz to 8oz depending on the water current where you fish. Sturgeon bites is slow and the fishing tip bends down slowly and then back up again. It repeats two to three times before it bends down further. This is the time to set the hook real hard.

Striped bass fishing was hot during last week. Anglers got limit striped bass most of the time either by bait fishing or by trolling. Baits for striped bass can be grass shrimp, pile worm, blood worm, sardine, shad, or anchovy.

It should be used the lighter sinker when fishing for striped bass since striped bass like moving bait than stationary bait. Cannon ball sinker is best. However, the right sinker size is very important to keep the bait moving slowly with the current.

I went out last Sunday to troll for striped bass in Isleton area. I got 4 total but mostly small from 18” to 22”. I kept only 32” striped and was measure by DFG who ran the boat along the river on that day to survey the striped bass caught by anglers, I forgot to mention about the Broken Back Rebel is the lure I used for trolling with color chartreuse and red head.

Best luck to you all and have a nice coming weekend.

The Wilson Files- Mark Wilson

I've had a pretty good last few days of striper trolling. Last Wednesday was a 29 keeper day to 12#. Last Friday was a 28 keeper day to 8 pounds. Last Sunday was a 30 keeper day to 12 pounds, plus one 3 pound smallmouth. Today was only 12 keepers to 10 pounds. I've been fishing the lower Old Sac from the mouth up to Walnut Grove. I've been trolling both Rebels and Bombers for the stripers. A note: The Sacramento River is on a "rise" and is up 2' at I Street in Sacramento from Sunday. The recent rains is probably going to "blow" the river out for the next couple of weeks. Tomorrow might be a catch day, but it is usually not good for stripers on a rising river. Maybe, trollers and pluggers might have to go back over to the San Joaquin side for a while. It was good while it lasted.

Sacramento Area Report - by Jack Chapman

Fishing Report for March 22, 2007

By Captain “Jack” Chapman and Lovely Linda Sportfishing

I am leaving on a “busman’s holiday” on Friday. I am going to spend 9 days trying out the action in Jacksonville FL. I’ll try to come back with a good report and some pictures.

Striped Bass

Last week the place to fish was the Port of Sacramento. Anglers were reporting 15 to 20 fish days with easy limits of keepers. The only draw back to the port is the long boat ride unless you happen to a small (under 20 foot) boat and know someone in the Washington Outboard Club. They are the only ones allowed to launch in the port. On Monday that is what I did with a friend of mine. Only the fish had left. I talked with at least 6 other boats and only one reported having a fish.

The most consistent, and now the best, action is on the Sacramento from Rio Vista to Collinsville trolling shallow (5 to 10 feet) during slack tide and deep (15 to 20 feet) during the ebb and flow. Several of our members have reported 15 to 20 fish days recently in that area.

Another of our members is working the Mokelumne, San Joaquin and Potato Slough triangle with some success. He has managed 3 to 6 fish on each of last 3 trips.

Sturgeon

Bay fishing is slowing way down. Typical reports from San Pablo Bay and the south bay read “a big fat goose egg”, “nada, zip zero”. At least as far as sturgeon are concerned. There does seem to a lot action leopard sharks, bat rays and seven gill sharks.

Fishing near the Moth Ball Fleet has been passable with 1 in three boats I talked to having at least a hookup. The action in Montezuma Slough and on the Sacramento seemed to be even better.

Where I’d Fish

Sacramento River between Rio Vista and Collinsville or Montezuma Slough for striped bass

Montezuma Slough and the Moth Ball Fleet for sturgeon

Little Potato Slough for catfish

There is not a whole lot to report since the storms came in. The striper bite was pretty good trolling before the hail storm and rain storms, so don't know what fishing will be like during the Easter Weekend. We had stripers come from the Isleton Bridge, Decker Island, Sandy Beach and we had Sturgeon from the Rio Vista Bridge and also at light 36-A

Good Luck

I will see you around mid to late March for the spring run. Of course the Stripers will dictate that.

A very special thanks to all the new fishing friends I found this year. Also thanks to people like Carlos Xavier who has been fishing with me for the 10 years I have been in business.

Thank you

A bit about Captain Steve, Captain Steve fished the San Francisco Bay since 1970, when his grandfather would take him out to the old Berkeley pier. He bought his first boat in 1980 and got his Captain's license in 1997. He enjoys small groups (no more than 6) and gives personal attention to all. Having 2 young daughters himself, he is especially patient with children on the boat. Bring your own equipment or use Steve's top of the line equipment. Steve has impressive state of the art commercial electronics on the boat to optimize your fishing experience! And yes, we went to the same High School, Welcome Capt. Steve!

Steve reports, "It looks like the spring run of bass has started. We have been targeting sturgeon and fishing just 1 to 2 rods for bass and doing well on the bass. The sturgeon fishing has still been scratchey. Last night we had on shaker and one oversized. But 3 bass at 8,16 and 27 lbs.

Same details as above.
