Stripers in The San Joaquin System in numbers

On
the San Joaquin River there are plenty of stripers, 3 to 16 pounds,
being caught in False River, Mokelumne River South Fork and Lighthouse.
Bank anglers Off Highway 4, are taking stripers up to 10 pounds
at the black bridge on the San Joaquin River and Old River off
Bacon Island. Shad and mudsuckers do the trick.
This past weeks trips were highlighted by spending the day with this young angler Royce and dad Obed. We are averaging 20 fish days with fish to 15 pounds. This day, about 20 fish to 22 pounds.
Action
is fair on the Sacramento River side for striped bass in the 20-
to 24-inch range that seem to be hooked by trollers and bait anglers
at a variety of locations, from Steamboat Slough down to Sherman
Island. Sturgeon, 58 to 65 inches grab grass and ghost shrimp
at the powerlines near Decker Island and Collinsville.
A few larger bass are showing at Collinsville, where a 31-pounder was taken on live bullheads. Near Rio Vista,
there is a consistent striper bite at the Old Dairy, Sandy Beach
Regional Park and the Highway 12 bridge.
The
big news continues to be that Big Stripers like the South Delta,
Grantline canal, Mildred Island lead the big striper bites all
kicking out linesides over 35 pounds in the last 10 days or so.
While the popular Dam areas aren’t producing flats next
to deep water have been key to the success for anglers fishing
live bait!
Crappie
are king! Bank anglers fishing the levees off Eight Mile Road,
Bacon Island Road and Lower Jones Tract Road, where small- and
medium-sized minnows are used to catch crappie.

Vista - Isleton
Bob’s
Bait Report www.themasterbaiter.com
It was warmer in November and the raining season starting late this
year. It’s really cold in early morning the clear blue sky
through the day is best for outdoor activities including fishing,
walking, running.
This time of the year when the fall run for striped bass and salmon
reach to its peak, the change to catch for striped bass and salmon
is still high. Since most anglers for salmon moving up to Freeport
area where number of bright fresh salmons were caught during the
week from Walnut Grove up to the mouth of American River. The number
of salmons reported in Isleton declined due to less fishing activities
latterly. In the meantime, striped bass fishing activities were
picking up and there were very high number of striped bass was caught
in the Delta overall increased. Striped bass hot spots are Broad
Slough, Montezuma Slough, Sherman Island, Decker Island, and Along
Highway 160 from Brannan Island State Park up to Isleton Bridge.
The best bait for striped bass is fresh shad. Using fresh shad in
proper way is very important to catch more fish. Butterfly, or cut
the head off before hooking to let the bait spread the scene in
the water to attach the fish. Beside, proper sinker size is very
important to contribute for more fish catching. The less water current
flow, the less sinker weight would place on the rig to make bait
bouncing slowly with the current but it’s not completely stationary
in one place.
Trolling
for striped bass is very much fun and skillful technique to catch
the fish. Broken Back Rebel, or Bomber lure can be used depend the
water depth. Broken Back Rebel is tied directly or tie the fishing
line to Duo-Lock swivel then snapping it to the lure. Trolling at
the speed of 2 to 2-1/2 Mph (GPS) and let the line out up to 120
feet away from the boat. The lure should tap the bottom once awhile.
Check to be sure any leaves, weed, and clam do not cross the lure.
Decker Island, Sandy Beach, North of Rio Vista Bridge, Long Island,
Isleton Bridge, Mokelumne River from highway 12 Bridge up to the
split of the river into North and South Mokelumne Rivers are the
good place to troll for striped bass.
Sturgeon
fish is fair at Bay Point up to Rio Vista Bridge. Some sturgeons
were caught last week at Light 42, Light 44, and Light 49 in Cache
Slough. The best bait for sturgeons can be grass shrimp, ghost shrimp,
lamprey eel, and salmon roe. Sturgeon was also caught on fresh shad,
sardine.
The
long weekend holiday is approached. It would be very busy weekend
in the late fall. The demand for baits would be very high and number
of baits store in the Delta couldn’t handle with that huge
demand. For that reason, if you plan for fishing trip in the Delta,
be sure to call to your favorite bait store to check for the bait
you prefer to. The bait stores information can be found in the www.californiadelta.org
or www.fishdelta.com.
Good luck and wish all of you and your family having wonderful Thanksgiving
weekend.

Hook
Line And Sinker Report
Robert from the Hook in Oakley reports.

Black Bass:
The bass bite has seemed to pick up a little in consistent average
weights as some of the more recent tournaments have seen a 3 lb.
or better average to win. The crankbait bite has busted wide open
with Luhr-Jensen Speed Traps and River2Sea V-Crank 60 being the
top producers. Both in shad or red craw patterns will produce
big numbers of fish and size as well. Look for the fish to be
moving into areas where they can corral baitfish. Also, if you
get bit in one area continue fishing it thoroughly because will
be schooled up and catching multiple fish in one area is not uncommon
right now.
Striped Bass:
With the recent rains and winds of the past 2 weeks the river
has started to muddy up which has scattered the fish off the main
rivers and into more protected areas that are holding cleaner
water. Try heading further east into the delta to find this. Disco
Bay has turned on as of late with fish to 27lbs. being reported
to me. Most people are waiting to find busting bait then catching
them on topwater baits, swimbaits and rattletraps. When the fish
are so closely schooled up colors of the baits don't really seem
to matter but anything in a shad pattern will get eaten!
Crappie:
The crappie have seemed to turn on big time around the whole delta.
Mostly marinas and areas with wood seemed to be holding the most
fish and I have had a lot of reports of BIG crappie being caught
right now. Try crappie jigs in red/white, chartreuse or brown,
red worms or small minnows all fished either under a bobber or
off the bottom will draw strikes right now.

Flash
Fishing Report www.flashfishing.net
A
bit about Captain Steve, Captain Steve fished the San Francisco
Bay since 1970, when his grandfather would take him out to the
old Berkeley pier. He bought his first boat in 1980 and got his
Captain's license in 1997. He enjoys small groups (no more than
6) and gives personal attention to all. Having 2 young daughters
himself, he is especially patient with children on the boat. Bring
your own equipment or use Steve's top of the line equipment. Steve
has impressive state of the art commercial electronics on the
boat to optimize your fishing experience! And yes, we went to
the same High School, Welcome Capt. Steve!
I
am starting to see some nice Sturgeon. Also I think the fall bass
run is starting to go.Most of the action seems to be at night.
Saturday night we targeted bass.3 rods had 7 solid runs and many
drivebys.
I also know of fish up to 32lbs landed.I am not fishing this week
due to slow tides.Next week I will be in Cabo San Lucas for a
week. But the month of December I plan on pounding the fish.December
is full of great tides.
I hope you enjoy some photos from the last week.
