– Records Fall as Spring Erupts at the Delta for Rhyme and
Monaghan
Records were made to be broken and on this day they fell like timber.
84 teams checked in at Russo’s Marina for the third stop on
this years Delta Region of 100% BASS. The buzz all week long was
“Will this be the day, the big bag finally shows up”.
With slightly overcast skies and virtually no wind, conditions were
perfect for something special to happen, and it did
Buddy
Rhyme and Ryan Monaghan of Reno Nevada did what no team has ever
done on the Delta. Their 5 fish winning limit tipped the scales
at a record setting 40.51 Lbs, giving them the distinction of being
the first team ever to cross the 40 pound marker for 5 fish. It
always helps to have a good kicker and they did, a 100% BASS Record
as the largest fish ever brought to our scales, a behemoth, 14.40
pound bucket mouth. During an interview Rhyme told of their pattern
that had them starting up north and working their way back to Franks
Tract. The entire day was spent with Flippin’ Sticks in hand
and two Jigs. A Brown/Green tied on one rod and a Black/Blue on
the other. Monaghan wanted to thank DANDY JIGS, a local guy in Reno
that “Makes one heck of a great jig”. When you win big,
it deserves a big check and this is the last of the three records
Buddy and Ryan broke. Along with a fine pair of trophies donated
by the Hook, Lione & Sinker, Their $6615 is the largest winners
take in regular team fishing ever on the west coast. Congratulations
to Buddy and Ryan for a once in a lifetime day on the water.
Second
place went to Modesto’s George Siggins of Elk Grove and Matt
Engelman of Manteca. In any other tournament the weight of 32.96
Lbs would have been a winner, but today just wasn’t meant
to be. Engelman congratulated the winners as he spoke at the awards
about their pattern for the day. They spent all day in one small
area of the delta near Tower Park, and caught all of the bigger
fish on PB&J Senko’s and White Spinnerbaits. This was
a very impressive bag, considering the big fish was only 7.91 lbs.
We would like to thank George as one of our sponsors also. Proprietor
of Sig Fish Inc. home of “The Chlorinating Fish” he
and Matt had a great day. The reward wasn’t bad either as
they received a pair of those nice trophies from “The Hook”
and a check for $3345.
Finishing
in third was long time Delta Guide Bobby Barrack and DJ’s
Rod Repair owner Jeff Skaggs. Their kicker bass came in at 9.09
lbs and anchored a total weight of 32.79 Lbs. Today was a special
day fort these guys as a pattern Jeff found in practice paid off
late in the day. Yes, the frog bite has already started. Bobby told
how they caught most of their fish on Terminator Spinnerbaits, but
it was the Snag Proof Frog that maid the difference at the end of
the day. That difference turned out to be $2025 and more wood for
the trophy wall as Barrack thanked all his sponsors at the awards.
Next,
was the team of Bryan Roland of Brentwood and Mike Bryant of Oakley.
Hard to believe, but yes, it took 30.54 Lbs for forth place. Like
I said, any other day and these are winning weight. They did win
$1600, which wasn’t bad for as a consolation. Rounding out
the top 5 was Fresno’s Mike Pair and Madera’s Joe Spraggins.
They came in with 5 fish that totaled 28.91 lbs and netted them
$985.
Winner of this events Mossdale boats $1000 gift certificate that
is good towards the purchase of a new BassCat Boat, or can be transfered
to someone else wanting a BassCat, were Dave Moen and James Nevels.
