Anglers
Ready for Big Derby
It
seems that just a couple years ago I was writing about a sturgeon
Derby that started with Joe Ament and a bunch of friends tossing
money into a coffee can. Boy Howdy have things changed last years
derby paid-out nearly $19,000 dollars each day for the 700 boats
and nearly 1400 plus anglers.
 Super
Sturgeon Derby is just around the corner February 5-6th and entries
are due in by the 25nd at McAvoy Yacht Harbor or Bait Shop. For
Information on the Event call 510.458.0647 or the Bait Shop at 510.458.1710.
The Derby registration started January 2 and checks will be excepted
through the 25th January after that it’s cash only. So get
those last minute entries in, I’m going to miss this years
event, but we will be looking forward to reporting a great turn-out.
Due to the size of the event now all boat members must be entered
at one time. Hey, don't forget to make those bait reservations,
with the continued growth of this event bait can be tough to get,

The
concept of fishing for a specific target length sturgeon is an exciting
one as with each pull of the rod tip anglers may find the perfect
length sturgeon, which could be worth a piece of $40,000.
As
for the bite it could be better yet things are improving some throughout
the area as anglers ready for the derby. The bite has been solid,
as rains have prevailed but anglers are still getting their fish.
There have been some good fish in the Cut, but there are fish scattered
in good numbers all the way up into the Rio Vista area and below
into San Pablo Bay. Most anglers wont run that far and there will
be boats everywhere on Superbowl Weekend so plan on seeing others.
The
best baits have been Grass Shrimp, Ghost shrimp and Pile Worms for
most area regulars. This past weekend area regulars were reporting
success from the Fleet all the way to Decker Island. There are some
that are finding success with cut-baits like shad and anchovies.
There are a few stripers still coming from the area for those fishing
cut-bullheads in deeper water.

SUPERBOWL WEEKEND
Saturday February 5, 2005 – 7:00a.m. to Sunday February 6,
2005 – 1:00p.m.
Entry deadline: 7:00a.m. Saturday February 5, 2005
Entry Fee: $35.00 for Captain and $25.00 for each person on boat
Cash or Check ONLY – No checks after January 25th by mail
Boat Captain will receive Derby Flag to be visible on boat during
Derby
Pay – 7 places each day with same target length. Target size
at 7:00a.m. Saturday
DERBY RULES
1. ALL persons on boat must be entered in Derby – No Bank
Fishermen.
2. All fish measured at Sportsmen’s Club, McAvoy Harbor.
3. Fish must be alive, with no damage to head or tail.
4. For each sturgeon kept, you must fish with one less pole on boat
for that day.
5. Any violation of Fish and Game or Derby rules will disqualify
the whole boat.
6. Derby updates on the hour: VHF 68
7. All persons on boat that are cash winners may be required to
pass polygraph to claim prize.
